The MPP Program & Units

To complete the MPP program students must accumulate 32 credit points, which means the successful completion of 8 units of study. The degree can be taken on a full time or part time basis and completed in one year or over a number of years. Students can vary their rate of progress to meet their other commitments.

For students commencing the program from 2005, four of the units are core (compulsory) units and students are advised to complete these as early in their program of study as possible. These units are offered once a year.

These students are then required to complete an additional four units. These elective Units provide students with an opportunity to specialise and enable the program to keep abreast of contemporary issues in public policy. The Elective units are rotated over a number of years, depending on the availability of staff and student interest.

Students who commenced the program in earlier years, complete the program they started. That means, for continuing students, there are only two core units. They are, however, able to take the additional core units as elective units in their program.

With the approval of the Course Convenor, students may chose up to two of the additional units they have to complete from postgraduate degree programs other than the MPP. These units have been approved by the Academic Senate as meeting the requirements for credit toward the MPP. This provides an added dimension of flexibility to the MPP.

The Internship Project Unit is a feature of the MPP. MPP interns work for four to six weeks in a public service department, parliamentary office or non-government public sector organisation on a particular piece of work that the host organisation wants completed. The NSW Health Department, Department of Education, Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability, Premier’s Department, Cabinet Office and NSW Ombudsman’s Office have already hosted MPP interns or expressed their willingness to do so, as have the Australian Law Reform Commission, and members of NSW Parliament.

Students with an interest in serving an internship with a particular department or organisation should discuss their interest with the MPP Convenor whose express approval for enrolment in the unit if required.
